20 Creative, Artistic and Geeky Cake Designs

Even geeks, believe it or not, like to party, and this sweet selection of artistic confection showcases the many ways geeks can have their cake and eat it too - with or without an .exe file baked inside. No, these cakes are not a lie (if you don’t get the reference, you may still be a geek.)

Before there were comps, there were cubes… Rubik’s Cubes. This 1980s icon of geek culture is still going strong today, and the above colorful concoction would make a great celebratory centerpiece for a speed-cubing competition.

This slightly simpler Rubik’s Cube cake above has Butter Pecan cake and Chocolate cake on the inside, covered (slathered might be a better word) with lots of colorful icing. The generic style of this cake along with the lack of lettering makes it ideal for any geekish occasion, not just a birthday.

The first arcade video games changed the way youth culture looked at computers, free time and quarters… by combining them! Tetris, Space Invaders and Asteroids have all been immortalized in one way or another, but perhaps not as deliciously as the Asteroids cake shown above. What better way to savor the sweet sense of victory than by eating the high score?

Pac-man is another early videogame that, thanks to the design of the game and the characters, lends itself to creative constructions of all kinds. The baked desserts from (above, clockwise) Cakehead, Elanso and DandelionDesign look too good to last long without being gobbled up.

Movies and TV are also great fodder for geek cakes, especially sci-fi and that means Star Trek and Star Wars. Trekkies giddy to go where no man (or “no one”, for TNG fans) has gone before will find themselves transported with glee when presented with this, er, enterprising creation. Check out the detail, down to Kirk’s casual pose and Spock’s Vulcan ears.

For those with less time and considerably less obsession, the above pair of Trek cakes convey the message without going all Neelix-like in the kitchen. Galley. Whatever. “Live Long and Prosper” is actually an ideal birthday wish, regardless of its geeky origins.

Star Wars has its own set of geek fans and some of the larger creations pack enough sugar, carbs and cholesterol to make Darth Vader turn pale. Get ready to chew-bacca like Jabba on these sinfully delicious cinematic cakes, and… may the forks be with you!

If Mom made you a Death Star birthday cake, you might want to have li’l sis taste test it first. Seriously, the Death Star? On your Birth Day? Well, things could always be worse…

Yes, it’s the “Baby Alien” cake, created for some geekette’s baby shower by Zarathud, a cake-maker with an unearthly sense of humor. That’s one weird kid and he/she’s not even born yet! The alien shown bursting from the flesh-toned body of the cake is made of marzipan and drips bright red raspberry “blood”.

Reluctantly leaving the world - universe, even - of entertainment, the following cakes stick tightly to the ribs of every geek’s obsession: computers. Comp cakes are a dime a dozen but it takes a capital G Geek to appreciate the Motherboard cake depicted above left. The clincher? Chorltan, whose wife baked the sugary circuit board says “I did a google search and could not find any other references to such a thing.” Sorry Chorltan, you should have adjusted your search parameters… it seems your birthday surprise is not the mother of all motherboard cakes.

There are hardware geeks and there are software geeks, linked by their love of cake. Even so, one can’t expect a Linux lover to enjoy a Windows cake, birthday or not. For those who follow the cult of the penguin, the Tux cake above is just the thing. Handle with care - Ubuntu, you buy it.

Speaking of Windows, the much maligned Vista operating system recently celebrated it’s first birthday and the occasion called for a Vista cake… and not just any cake would do. One must assume the knife-wielding server either hates Vista or loves cake - or maybe both. In any case, Vista’s bright and colorful logo has inspired more than a few cake-making attempts that, like its namesake, have been known to fall flat when the heat is on.

Computers themselves are favorite subjects for geeks of all ages. Decorating options range from whimsical gumdrop keys to factual representations that go for accuracy down to the cables and connecting ports.

Perhaps the ultimate geek cake would be one baked not in the oven, but IN a computer! While it may look more like a pancake than a cake baked in a pan, what comes out of the cheekily named PC-EZ-Bake Drive will pass the taste test for any student cramming for an exam. That is, of course, if it were real - and it’s not. Full props to the ThinkGeek geeks for the concept though!

Birthdays don’t have a monopoly on cakes and geeks do grow up and get married… well, some do. Those with exceedingly tolerant fiances or, wonder of wonders, are marrying their opposite-sex geek counterpart might want to consider a wedding cake that reflects their mutual interests. Forget the champagne, these geek wedding cakes are best served with Benderbrau or Botweiser.

The award for Most Obvious name goes to… the iCake. Apple’s iPhone, not to mention the company’s other i-products, lend themselves particularly well to cake design and there are a huge variety of them out there. Some are better than others and the precise design above (beside the water bottle) is one of the most elaborate.
